Telegram Desktop vs TGDesk

Updated · TGDesk

Short answer: Telegram Desktop is free, official and handles up to 3 accounts per installation (more with Premium), with message translation built in. It is the right choice for personal use and for two or three accounts. TGDesk is for people who answer customers from several accounts: it puts every account's chats into one inbox, searches across all of them, translates incoming messages and reply drafts, and reads text in images (OCR), with data kept encrypted on your computer. TGDesk is coming soon and not yet downloadable.

Side-by-side

Telegram Desktop facts are from its official changelog, the Telegram FAQ and the translation API docs, as of October 2026.

Where Telegram Desktop is the better choice

Where TGDesk helps

Several accounts, one inbox

With Telegram Desktop, a fourth or fifth account means another installation and another window. TGDesk keeps each account isolated but lists all chats together, so "who is waiting for a reply" is one filter instead of a tour of windows.

Customers who write in other languages

Telegram's own translation is good and free per message, with automatic whole-chat translation for Premium accounts (Premium is billed per account). TGDesk shows the translation under the original for any account where you enable it, makes translated text searchable, and can translate your draft into the customer's language; sending stays a separate click. The default engine runs on your computer, so text does not leave it unless you choose a cloud engine.

Screenshots and photos with text

Support chats are full of screenshots: payment receipts, error messages, order pages. TGDesk reads the text in incoming photos and image documents, makes it searchable across accounts, and lets automation rules react to it (for example "image text contains refund"). Telegram Desktop's changelog lists no equivalent.

Data stays on your PC

Sessions are stored in an AES-256-GCM encrypted vault under a key in your operating system's keystore. Chat text is not used for model training.

Using both

They are not exclusive. A common setup is Telegram Desktop for your personal account and calls, and a manager for the work accounts. TGDesk migrates existing Telegram Desktop logins by reading their folders read-only, so the original app keeps working.

Bottom line

If you have up to three accounts and mostly chat yourself, use Telegram Desktop. If you run several accounts for customers, especially across languages and screenshots, TGDesk is being built for exactly that. It is a paid app, coming soon. Also compare Rambox and Ferdium alternatives.

FAQ

Does Telegram Desktop translate messages?

Yes. Enable it in Settings → Language. All users can translate individual messages; Telegram Premium users can turn on automatic translation of entire chats. Translation is done through Telegram's servers.

Does Telegram Desktop have OCR?

Text recognition in images is not listed in Telegram Desktop's official changelog as of October 2026. Some phone systems, such as iOS Live Text, offer it at the operating-system level.

Is TGDesk a replacement for Telegram Desktop?

It is aimed at a narrower job: answering many chats across several accounts. Many people will keep Telegram Desktop for personal use.

Can TGDesk use my existing Telegram Desktop login?

TGDesk is designed to migrate logins from Telegram Desktop folders you already use, opening the original files read-only and storing the result in an encrypted vault. It is coming soon and not downloadable yet.
