How to copy text from images in Telegram

Updated · TGDesk

Short answer: Telegram has no OCR listed in its desktop changelog, but your device does. On Windows 11, take a snip (Win+Shift+S) and use Text Actions. On Mac and iPhone, open the image and select text with Live Text. On Android, use Google Lens on a screenshot. If you deal with lots of customer screenshots (receipts, error messages, order pages) across several accounts, TGDesk (coming soon) reads them automatically and makes the text searchable.

On Windows

  1. Open the image in Telegram Desktop.
  2. Press Win+Shift+S and capture the area.
  3. In Snipping Tool, click Text Actions, then copy all or part of the text.

On macOS

  1. Save the image (right-click → Save As) and open it in Preview, or take a screenshot.
  2. Select the text directly with the cursor (Live Text) and copy.

On iPhone

Take a screenshot or save the photo, open it in Photos and press on the text to select it with Live Text.

On Android

Take a screenshot and open it in Google Lens (or the Lens button in Google Photos), then select Text.

Why this is painful for support teams

Each of these is a manual step per image. When customers send payment receipts and error screenshots all day across several accounts, the text in those images is invisible to search: you cannot find "the customer who sent order 18234" later.

TGDesk: OCR built into the inbox

TGDesk is a paid desktop app, coming soon, with a mobile app planned. It is independent and not affiliated with Telegram.
